At the end of 2023 I talked to All About Jobs about what the make-up artist profession looks like in Romania today. If you are thinking of turning make-up into a career, here is what I have seen in more than ten years in the job.
Why demand for make-up courses has grown
I chose this job out of a passion for beauty and colour, and I can say it was the best decision I ever made. I see more and more Romanians drawn to the field, which people often associate with a glamorous world. Demand for make-up courses has grown significantly over the last five years, for a few reasons:
- Social media and beauty influencers have brought make-up to a wide audience through tutorials and daily content.
- The cosmetics industry keeps growing, and so does the need for well-trained professionals.
- It is a versatile, flexible career: you can work at events, in fashion, in television and film, or open your own business.
What a make-up course teaches you
A good course gives you more than technique. The core skills are:
- precision and technique;
- creativity and a style of your own;
- adapting make-up to face shapes, features and each client’s wishes;
- communicating with and advising clients.
I teach both self make-up, for women who want to do their own, and professional courses, for those who want a career. I have also expanded online, which lets me reach students all over Romania and abroad. For self make-up there is my online course AutoMakeUp or the workshop; for make-up artists, the live programme Makeup PRO.
Where a make-up artist can work
The beauty industry is booming and offers several paths in Romania:
- film, television and theatre;
- fashion;
- weddings and events;
- the cosmetics industry.
Many talented make-up artists have also built careers abroad. With a strong portfolio and solid skills, there are opportunities in fashion, film and television in many places around the world. I have worked on a few international video projects: a new, fascinating and challenging experience. Abroad you get more exposure and more opportunities, but you need adaptability and perseverance to stay competitive. The essence of the job stays the same everywhere, though: professionalism, responsibility and dedication.
How much a make-up artist earns in Romania
Income varies a lot: from a few hundred lei for a day make-up to several hundred euros for special events or complex projects. Some colleagues reach a steady income and grow their business, while others have a harder road. What generally makes the difference:
- solid professional skills;
- a client network that you build and keep;
- adapting to changes in the industry;
- how you promote yourself and build your personal brand.
How the profession is seen today
In recent years the image of the make-up artist has changed a lot. Social platforms have turned make-up into a form of art and self-expression, and professionals have raised the quality bar. Today make-up artists are seen as essential professionals in beauty, film, television and fashion. Make-up is seen as a tool that builds confidence and helps you feel good in your own skin. With that recognition, standards have risen too: more advanced skills and knowledge are often expected.
My advice for a career in make-up
- Keep investing in your education. Courses, workshops and training keep you up to date with new techniques and trends.
- Build practical experience and a varied portfolio. A rich portfolio shows who you are as a professional.
- Be persistent and adaptable. The industry is competitive; stay positive when you hit obstacles and stay open to new trends and demands.
- Build your personal brand. A clear identity sets you apart, and a steady presence on social media brings visibility and clients.
In short: a make-up career in Romania takes passion, dedication and perseverance.
