In June 2017 I talked to LIFE.ro about what makes make-up work and about the small tricks I use every day. The advice holds up just as well today, so I have gathered it here.

Skin comes first

Good make-up brings out your natural beauty instead of hiding it. That is why, for me, skin is the essential element of any make-up look and deserves special attention.

My favourite trick: highlighter in the right places

I love a glow, that soft light that makes the face look fresh. I apply highlighter on a few points:

  • the Cupid’s bow;
  • the bridge of the nose;
  • the brow bone;
  • the area just above the brows;
  • the tops of the cheekbones;
  • the centre of the eyelids.

That glow gives the whole look a really delicate touch.

Make-up for the warm season

A few rules that work in summer:

  • A fluid foundation with sun protection, in a very small amount, for fresh, natural-looking skin.
  • A chocolate-toned highlighter on top of the cheekbones to show off your tan.
  • Waterproof eye pencils for the eye contour. You can go for navy, green, brown, plum or grey without worrying that your eye make-up will disappear.
  • Blush in pink or peach. A natural look with softly flushed cheeks feels just right for this time of year.

If you never wear make-up, or wear it every day

If you don’t wear make-up, start with proper skincare and one brave gesture: a lipstick that reflects your personality.

If you wear make-up every day, choose your products for your skin type and the season, and apply the “less is more” rule from time to time.

My ideal make-up kit

I was once asked what I would put in my own make-up line if it could only have ten products. Here is what I chose:

  1. a face primer;
  2. foundation;
  3. concealer;
  4. powder, loose and pressed;
  5. cream eyeshadows;
  6. blush, pressed and cream;
  7. highlighter, pressed and cream;
  8. lipstick;
  9. lip gloss;
  10. mascara.

At the AutoMakeUp workshop we talk about exactly these must-haves for your kit, and use them on your own face.

What being a make-up artist means to me

I am a make-up artist because it defines and completes me. I love playing with shades and creating beautiful things, and make-up gives me energy and inspiration in everything I do.

It isn’t always easy. Projects, filming days and photo shoots can run past 12 hours, during which you keep watching the image on the camera screen and step in whenever needed, mostly on your feet. But when you see a really good photo, or a happy face in the mirror after a make-up session, you forget all the effort and keep only the satisfaction of a job well done.
